Vote:Blood Group

Today, I just started to make a survey on Cambodian Blood type(group).
What would be the proportion of the type for Cambodian people??

Here is some data for blood type.
  • Relatively more TYPE O people. Average distribution ratios in Japan: TYPE-O 30.7%, TYPE-A 38.1%, TYPE-B 21.8%, TYPE-AB 9.4%.
  • Average distribution ratios in U. S.: TYPE-O 46%, TYPE-A 43%, TYPE-B 8%, TYPE-AB 3%.
"What is your blood group?" is a typical question asked by Japanese. One's blood group in Japan is like a bit like their zodiac sign, it (is supposed to) tell about the person's character. Anyways I don't believe about that. But I just want to know what is the statistic for Cambodian Blood group.

Hammock in Room

pic: from yahoo.com
Recently there are many kind of hammock.Everybody know what hammock is? i hope so. And i do hope everybody used to sleep in hammock.
In case some one don't know what it is, Wikipedia hammock explains :
The hammock is a fabric sling used for sleeping or resting. It consists of cloth or a network of twine or thin natural or rope which is stretched between two firm points such as trees or attached to a metal or wood structure. Hammocks are widely used for relaxation in backyards, cottages, and waterfront areas, and they are carried as a lightweight type of bed on camping trips. They are also used for sleeping on ships and spacecraft.
To me, hammock is either good for sleeping and for lying down.when seeing hammock i just thinking of Preak Leab . anyways, i have one in my room now. to tell the true not just now. i have it many years ago but i just use it in summer time. and this year i just put it in service since weekend.

早朝問題Early Problem

Today i just come to my lab from 2:00AM . But some thing wrong.
when i revise my data, i found some thing wrong with them.
The reliability of result analyzed is not guaranteed . I just say by incident some improper result in some graph. what can i do.

design of Mr KUROZAWA Akira.it is nothing concerned with this post.
i personally just love it.
And then What a surprise. Some one enter my lab. and that was my Senior. her PC got big problem. the monitor doesn't worked. in reality the monitor is perfectly worked but the video card that send signal to monitor doesn't worked. it is big problem cos she has an appointment with supervisor and a visiting researcher . but she can't access to the data in her PC.
if it is my PC i should take off the hard disc and connect it to other PC then i can copy the data out but as it is not mine i don't have enough priority and i also don't have responsibility in case of further damage.
Finally, she has to redo the report again. What a pity ! But i can't help .

This is IN THE NEWS in VOA Special English.

For the last several weeks, professional athletes have been on the first page of newspapers as much as in the sports pages. Some news stories are about extraordinary careers. Others are about athletes behaving badly.

Professional baseball players Cal Ripken and Tony Gywnn are among the heroes.

Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken Jr. after they entered the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.
Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken Jr. after they entered the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.
They were admitted into the Baseball Hall of Fame Sunday at a ceremony in Cooperstown, New York. About seventy-five thousand fans gathered there to celebrate. Both men spoke about the importance of the public image of athletes. Gwynn said professional baseball was about more than just playing. He said players need to do the right thing for all the fans who love the sport. Ripken said players are behavior models whether they like it or not. He said the only question is whether they will be good ones or bad ones.

Barry Bonds, right, and Doug Mirabelli watch Bonds's 748th career home run.
Barry Bonds, right, and Doug Mirabelli watch Bonds's 748th career home run.
The speeches followed weeks of legal charges, accusations and investigations involving sports professionals. In baseball, Barry Bonds is two homeruns away from breaking the record set by Hank Aaron in nineteen seventy-six. Bonds' success has renewed accusations that he used banned performance-improving drugs. However, Bonds has never failed a drug test nor has he been charged with any crime.

Similar accusations of banned drug use also took place at the Tour de France bicycle race last month. Several riders tested positive for a performance-improving drug. And, in the final week of the race, the leading cyclist Michael Rasmussen of Denmark was expelled on suspicion of taking banned drugs.

The International Cycling Union said there were more cases of doping in the Tour de France this year because there was more testing.

An American professional football player is also in the news. Last week, Michael Vick told a court in Richmond, Virginia, he was not guilty of charges connected to an illegal dog-fighting business. The charges include extreme cruelty to animals.

Federal investigators say they found fight dogs and other evidence on Michael Vick's property in Virginia earlier this year. A defendant who pled guilty in the case has agreed to speak against Vick in court in return for a lesser sentence. Several sporting goods companies that had paid Vick for the use of his name have ended their business relationship with him. And an animal rights group, the Humane Society, is urging the National Football League to suspend Vick from play.

Finally, some bad news in professional basketball. United States federal officials are investigating former National Basketball Association referee Tim Donaghy. The referee enforces the rules and keeps order in the game. He can stop play if he calls a violation by a player and turn the ball over to the opposing team. Donaghy is being investigated for betting money on basketball games, including some in which he was a referee. He resigned last month.

FF2:Rise of the Silver Surfer

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer Director: Tim Story
Writers: Mark Frost
Cast: Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Michael Chiklis, Chris Evans, Julian McMahon, Kerry Washington, Andre Braugher, Gonzalo Menendez.
Release Date: June 15, 2007

From the handful of impressive trailers we've seen so far, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer is inspired by some of the best storytelling in the history of Marvel Comics - issues 48 through 50 of Fantastic Four, known (by some) as the Galactus Trilogy.

This tale, appearing both at the midpoint of the 1960s and at the apogee of the groundbreaking Jack Kirby/Stan Lee collaboration, is a comics milestone. It signals the beginning of Kirby's mature period as a master visual storyteller, and marks one of the first successful attempts by Lee to set his fourcolor characters on a grand metaphysical stage. Kirby's Silver Surfer, a liquid-chrome angel of hyper-motion and divine grace, would speak with a voice culled from some of Lee's best highfalutin superhero angst.

In that original story, the Surfer is a star-spanning fallen angel (with silver skin, surfboard and the 'Power Cosmic' in place of halo, wings, and Divine Grace) who serves as the herald of Galactus, a nigh omnipotent being that can sustain its existence only by devouring planets. Finding the Earth a suitable world for his master's appetite, the Surfer ultimately has misgivings about the destruction of humanity. Befriended by the blind sculptor Alicia (the Thing's girlfriend), Galactus' herald is moved, in the end, to side with the Fantastic Four against the world-eater.

Galactus, as drawn by Kirby, is a cosmic cartoon of God if He were a super-villain: a colossus in purple armor, wearing a massive helmet sprouting what appears to be a set of bent tuning forks. Fighting a planet-eating Deity is not really an option for our heroes (though they do try). The story is only resolved by resorting to deus ex machina, when another inconceivably powerful cosmic entity, the Watcher (imagine a macrocephalic Telly Savalas, wearing a toga), arranges for Reed Richards to gain control of the awesome Ultimate Nullifer - a weapon that even Galactus fears. Though the threat is ended, Galactus strips the Surfer of his 'space-time' powers, and traps him on Earth to remain forever in the company of the humans he has chosen to defend.

Whether or not this tale - which made for great comic book storytelling at the high tide of the Marvel Age of Comics - can make a good two-hour movie (while remaining more or less faithful to its original) is a question worth considering.

It looks like director Tim Story has done his level best to bring the Silver Surfer (given body and motion by Hollywood's current go-to monster-guy, the affable Doug Jones, and voiced by Laurence Fishburne) to cinematic life. He looks great.

Ever since James Cameron's Terminator 2: Judgment Day, we comics aficionados have known (or dreamed, anyway) that a live-action big screen Surfer was possible. Shots from the first trailer, in which the Silver One interrupts Sue and Reed's wedding with his earthly arrival, bring to mind the work of artist Alex Ross in the graphic novel Marvels - for a diehard Marvel fan, it's awe-inspiring to see this favorite character brought to life. At the very least, this film will bring fans to the theater on the strength of a single premise - that they will actually get to see the Silver freakin' Surfer open a cosmic can on the Fantastic Four (and probably on Julian McMahon's Dr. Doom, as well).

We know very little about the film's plot beyond the basics: the Surfer comes to Earth, wreaks havoc, and is pursued by our heroes, who try to pluck out the heart of his mystery; Dr. Doom somehow gets involved. There's a wedding, a Fantasticar (one of Kirby's many credulity-staggering contraptions, a flying car with parts that separate and re-join), and somehow the Surfer's touch causes the team to switch powers. (What's up with that?)

The few details we can piece together from the trailers don't bode well for the movie's plot (usually we see bits of the absolute best stuff in these trailers... here, the pickings are sparse). Some of the advance word is not good. Apparently, nothing resembling the traditional Galactus will make an appearance. Reports of a not-too-threatening purple cloud do not quicken the blood, or raise our hopes - but on the other hand, a giant man in a purple suit with a tuning-fork hat might not translate neatly to the big screen.

What the film will have, hopefully, is an encore performance by its principal actors and director that builds on the best parts of the first movie and takes them further. Though it certainly has its flaws, 2005's Fantastic Four is a fun movie, and it has a lot of heart, particularly when it sticks to what made the Kirby and Lee quartet so compelling - Jack and Stan, as has often been pointed out, were using a superhero comic book to tell a story about a family.

Gruffudd, Alba, Chiklis, Evans and Story did a very good job of bringing that quality to life, and they gave the movie something that a lot of recent big screen Marvel adaptations (Daredevil, Elektra, and The Punisher come to mind) have lacked - recognizably human characters. No matter how fantastic the Fantastic Four may be, if we can look at them and see a geek, his best friend, a brainy sister and a hot-headed brother - then they'll actually mean something to us.

Hopefully, Story and company have paid attention to the negative fan response to the first film's Dr. Doom - it would be nice to see the greatest Marvel villain of all time done justice in a movie. It'll be nice, too, if Jessica Alba's Invisible Woman and Ioan Gruffudd's Mr. Fantastic are given a bit more to do. Since Ben Grimm's lady love, Alicia Masters (played by Kerry Washington in the first film), will be in this movie, we can dare to hope that some of her interaction with the Surfer from the original tale (and Ben's subsequent jealousy) will be retained. Frankie Raye (a love interest of Johnny's) shows up, too - played here by Beau Garrett - which leads us to wonder if a future turn for her as Nova (a herald of Galactus) might be in the works.

Minnesota Bridge Collapse

Interstate Highway 35W (I-35W) Mississippi River bridge (sometimes called Bridge 9340), built in 1967 by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MN/DOT), was an eight-lane, 1,900-foot (579 m) deck-arch truss bridge that carried Interstate Highway 35W across the Mississippi River in Minneapolis in the U.S. state of Minnesota. Located in Hennepin County in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area,[3] this north-south bridge connected the Minneapolis neighborhoods of Downtown East and Marcy-Holmes. It was Minnesota's busiest bridge[4] with 141,000 vehicles crossing the steel arch span every day.[2]

On August 1, 2007, the entire bridge collapsed from abutment to abutment, falling into the river and onto its banks during the weekday afternoon rush hour. There were at least 79 injuries and 4 deaths, with 8 still missing.

source : Wikipedia Reuter yahoo news

"There are more than 10 vehicles in the river," Fire Chief Jim Clack said, without indicating whether there were victims inside.

Four people were confirmed dead and authorities said the toll was certain to rise from the unexplained collapse of the 500-foot (150-meter) span.

"A bridge in America just shouldn't fall down," said Sen. Amy Klobuchar, a Minnesota Democrat.

More than 50 vehicles plunged 65 feet into the river and onto debris from Interstate 35W as the bridge collapsed in a plume of dust, smoke and screams.

More than 60 people were hurt, many suffering broken bones, head and spinal injuries.

Federal authorities quickly ruled out terrorism as a cause, but state and federal safety officials said the bridge's inspection record did not indicate it was unsafe.

Specifically, the collapse raised questions about work being done to patch and resurface the bridge.

Sandra Bullock

Sandra Bullock: Film Star, Producer, Wife
VOA
26 July 2007

HOST:

Welcome to AMERICAN MOSAIC, in VOA Special English.

(MUSIC)

I'm Doug Johnson. On our show this week:

We listen to music from Pink Martini …

Answer a question about actress Sandra Bullock …

And report about a sweet anniversary.

Hershey's Anniversary

HOST:

People around the world know and enjoy the chocolate candy from the Hershey Company. Company officials say they export Hershey's products to more than ninety countries. The Hershey Company celebrated an anniversary earlier this month in its hometown of Hershey, Pennsylvania. Faith Lapidus tells us about it.

FAITH LAPIDUS:

The street lights in Hershey, Pennsylvania are shaped like the candies the company is most famous for -- Hershey’s Kisses.

July seventh was the one hundredth anniversary of the Hershey's Kiss. The company

A Hershey's kiss
A Hershey's kiss
held a birthday party in its honor. Part of the celebration was the world’s largest Hershey's Kiss. The huge piece of chocolate weighed almost fourteen thousand kilograms. It was more than three and one-half meters tall. A representative from the Guinness Book of World Records officially named it the world’s largest piece of chocolate.

Hershey officials say the huge chocolate Kiss took one hundred fifty-two people nine days to produce. And they say the chocolate in it is equal to that of more than three million normal Hershey's Kisses.

The company began producing the chocolate with the unusual shape in nineteen-oh-seven. Officials today do not really know why the new candy was named a Kiss. One possible story is that the name came from the sound or motion of the chocolate during the manufacturing process.

Workers used to wrap each candy in a small piece of silver foil paper by hand until nineteen twenty-one. Then a machine was developed to do that. Today, the company produces more than eighty million Hershey’s Kisses every day. And modern wrapping machines finish the job. They can wrap more than one thousand Kisses every minute.

Some Hershey’s Kisses have remained the same over the years. But there are also many new versions. There are Kisses with an almond nut inside. Dark chocolate Kisses. And Kisses filled with caramel or peanut butter. There are also similarly shaped brown and white candies called Hugs.

Hershey’s Kisses are produced in Pennsylvania, California and Virginia. Recent news reports say the company will soon close one of its factories in California. The reports say the Kisses will be produced at a new Hershey factory in Mexico. They also say the candy company has closed at least three other factories this year.

Sandra Bullock

HOST:

Our listener question this week comes from Brazil. Anderlon Rocha de Oliveira wants to know more about actress Sandra Bullock.

Sandra Bullock
Sandra Bullock
Sandra Bullock is one of the most popular movie stars in America. She is especially famous for her work in funny love stories. But she has also proven herself a fine dramatic actress in movies like "Crash," and "Infamous."

Sandra Bullock was born in Arlington, Virginia in nineteen sixty-four. Her mother was a German-born opera singer. She died of cancer in two thousand. Bullock's father was a voice teacher and Defense Department employee. He now leads her production company, Fortis Films.

Sandra Bullock began performing as a young girl, often in music shows with her mother. She was involved in theater in high school. Then she studied acting at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina.

Bullock lived in New York City for a short time after college. She moved to Los Angeles, California after winning her first big job, a part in a movie made for television.

Sandra Bullock has performed in more than forty films. She has played a police officer, an alcoholic, a witch, a single mother, a rich lonely wife and many other characters. Her most recent movie, "Premonition," was released earlier this year.

Next up is a romantic comedy called "All About Steve." Bullock will play a woman who decides a reporter she sees on television is her true love. She starts to follow him all around the country hoping to persuade him that he loves her too.

Sandra Bullock does not have to do this kind of thing in real life. Two years ago she married Jesse James, the star of a television show called "Monster Garage."

Sandra Bullock is also known for helping others in need. She witnessed the terrorist attack on New York City in two thousand one. She was staying at a hotel several blocks away when the twin towers were destroyed. She gave one million dollars to the Red Cross to help those affected.

Bullock gave the organization another one million dollars to help victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami in two thousand four. And she continues to give time and money to help the city of New Orleans. That city is still recovering from the severe damage that Hurricane Katrina caused in two thousand five.

Pink Martini

HOST:

Pink Martini may sound like a kind of drink. But it is really a small orchestra of twelve musicians. A classically trained pianist, Thomas Lauderdale, created the group. He says the members of Pink Martini are like musical archeologists. They like to bring together sounds from different periods and parts of the world. Barbara Klein has more.

(MUSIC: "Tempo Perdido")

BARBARA KLEIN:

That was Pink Martini’s main singer China Forbes performing “Tempo Perdido” in

Pink Martini
Pink Martini
Portuguese. It is from the group’s latest album, “Hey Eugene!” The song was first performed in nineteen thirty-four by the famous Brazilian actress and singer Carmen Miranda. The beat of the song captures the sounds of another time period.

China Forbes and Thomas Lauderdale met in college. Several years later, Lauderdale asked her to join his new band.

Pink Martini skillfully recreates older songs from around the world in a modern and fresh way. Sometimes they find long forgotten favorites. Other times, China Forbes and Thomas Lauderdale write their own music and give it a special sound from the past. They have sung in many languages including French, Spanish, Japanese and Italian. At times they even sing in English. Here is China Forbes singing a song she wrote called “Everywhere."

(MUSIC)

Thomas Lauderdale says Pink Martini is very much an American band. But the band members spend a lot of time in other countries. He says his band tries to show that Americans are serious about being involved with the rest of the world.

We leave you with “Bukra Wba’do.” This is Pink Martini’s first song in Arabic. The song title means “tomorrow and the day after.” A professor of Arabic helped China Forbes and the group of twenty-five singers learn the correct pronunciation. The resulting song shows off Pink Martini’s musical as well as language skills.
